Callbacks to the 3rd Series

1st & 2nd Series – Land Double and Land Blind

99 Dogs Started this Series

Test Dogs started out the day at 7:20 am, beginning with "Brannagh" then "Rett" and finally honorary test dog "Mesa" made one final retrieve before retiring. This gave the competitors a good idea of what they might expect for these first two series. 

Our first running dog #55 FC-AFC SEASIDE’S ISSHEIT, “Zoey,” BLF with handler Chad Worsell came to the line at 8:00 am.

The weather today was sunny with a high of 70 and an 8 mph wind from the North.

Here is how things turned out for the 1st and 2nd Series…

Our last running dog for the day, and for Series 1 and 2 was dog #74 
JAYBAR CAPTAIN MACOMO, “Captain,” BLM with handler Jerry Younglove for a re-run. They completed the test at 6:06 pm.

99 dogs were sent from the line in this series, taking a total of 10 hours and 6 minutes, which averages out to be just about 6 minutes per dog.

F – A few turns left and right found her rooster in some tall cover.

LR – Nice line under the arc, 1 loop behind the bale and back to her bird.

B – Quick whistle and she got a nice angle across the field, 3 more whistles to the bird.

LR – Line out under the arc near the retired guns, then had a loop under the arc and a couple loops past the bird, and came back in to get it.

B – 1 whistle for a left cast half way to the bird, then a pick up whistle at the bird.

F – Came in under the arc for 1 small loop deep - then a wider loop left and moved right to the bird.

LR – Hunted wide right of the fall and behind the bird. Worked it out and got her bird.

B –  Started on a line right of the bird, 2 very nice casts to the tree line and 2 more and she had her bird.

 The National Anthem played at 7:55 am, followed by the Canadian National Anthem.

First test dog to the line was Brannagh with handler Peggy Knowles .... Brannagh came to the line at 7:20 am

Flyer – Dog sent for the flyer but came right back - then was sent for the bird under the arc where she looped and was to the bird.

Left Retired – Lined behind the bird, then a short area hunt to the bird.

Blind – 6 whistles - dog line was to the right, 6 left casts, then the dog was back in the trees, called back in and then back in the trees again, behind the planter, they came out to help the dog.

Next up was Rett and handler Deborah Gardner ... Rett came to the line at 7:28 am

Flyer – Beautiful flyer, short area hunt.

Left Retired – Stayed in front of the gun station and quickly got his bird.

Blind – Problem casting into the wind ... then the dog took a straight line to the tree, was picked up and asked to start over. Did a very nice blind on the rerun.


NOTE: Handlers are told they can move up or laterally in the mowed area in front of the mat.

1st & 2nd Series – Land Double and Land Blind

Welcome to Day One of the 2024 National Amateur Retriever Championship! 

99 dog/handler teams will start this morning, after having traveled from all over the US to compete in the lush Kennebec Valley of Maine.

It is currently 59 degrees and sunny, with an 8 mph wind coming from the north. It is expected to reach 72 degrees today and remain sunny. 

The 1st & 2nd Series of the 2024 NARC is located at Brian and Peggy Knowles property in Clinton, ME. 


SERIES 1 & 2
Land Double and Land Blind
This test uses all rooster pheasants

The mat faces SE, on the crest of a gently rolling hill. The field consists of thick grass cover with several mowed strips. 

Bird # 1 (LR) is a Rooster pheasant, thrown left to right, angled back, 150 yards from the running line. The bird lands just in front of a haybale. The gunner retires when the dog is sent for the flyer. 

Bird # 2 (F) is a Rooster flyer, shot right to left, 190 yards from the running line. 

After Test one, the handler will run a land blind. (B) A rooster pheasant is placed 220 yards from the running mat at the base of a bush. 

This test is taking approximately 5 minutes to complete.






Good Morning!

Good Morning Everyone and Welcome to the 2024 National Amateur Retriever Championship! 

This morning we are kicking off the event at the 1st and 2nd series test location. The test dogs will be running at 7:10 am, then we will have the National Anthem and be ready to begin! The morning has started out cloudy with temps currently at 60 degrees, with an expected high around 70. Partly cloudy conditions should give way to clear and sunny skies expected this afternoon. We will update you with changing conditions as the day goes on. For now, stay tuned as we prepare to begin the 67th National Amateur Retriever Championship!

99 Dogs will Start this 1st and 2nd Series. (4 dogs have Scratched: 51, 54, 91, 102)
